TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. LECTURES

Week 5 (Lecture 5):

- Typography / Task 2 / Tutorial Video

Fig.1.1.1 Typography Task 2 tutorial video

This week (21/10/2024), Mr. Vinod assigned a new task for us to complete, and this is the tutorial video of the task, which we can refer to.

Week 6 (Lecture 6):
Today (28/10/2024), Mr. Vinod gave us feedback of our text formatting and expression.

2. INSTRUCTIONS

Fig.2.1.1 Instructions - pdf

For this task, we will use Adobe InDesign to typographically compose and express the text within a given size (200 x 200 per pg).

3. TASK 2: TEXT FORMATTING AND EXPRESSION

3.1 Research

Fig.3.1.1 References for "Bauhaus" Type Expression

The Bauhaus movement sought to unify all forms of art such as architecture, painting, sculpture, and so on under the ideal of creating useful, beautiful, and mass-producible products. Hence,
I did some research on the Internet to get some inspiration on how I can do my composition and the text expression. I need to consider the movement's key design principles like simplicity, geometric shapes, and bold forms.

3.2 Sketches

Fig.3.2.1 Layout sketches on paper / (Week 5, 24/10/2024)

I came out with three different rough sketches of the layout; all of them focus on the word "Bauhaus", which is the headline in text. Besides, the headline, lead-in text, and text were separate in the layout. I also draw some shapes as abstracts elements to express Bauhaus.

After that, I used Adobe Illustrator for the type expression for Bauhaus. Using the Pen Tool to trace out the word and add different black-and-white colour to it. The instruction mentioned not to use too many graphical elements, so I think the second is not suitable for my type expression. So, I will do the arrangement and finalize it in the text formatting.

Actually, I wanted my type expression to be like above the image, but it's too graphic.

LAYOUTS

I used the Pen Tool to draw a frame, then used the "Type on Path tool" to insert the text into the shape, representing the paragraph wrapping around the edges of the letter "h".

3.4 Final Outcome

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod (Week 6, 28/10/2024), I made some changes to my layout that I chose (#5), removed the elements, changed the letter "a" to be more abstract, and resized the letter to the same size. Here's my final outcome.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 6

General Feedback:
Mr. Vinod mentions several things that we should be aware of, which are making sure that our line length is correct, the character of words, and headlines are readable, avoiding large spaces as it breaks reading rhythms, and also fixing the word inside the margins, which is very important.

Specific Feedback:
The design is good, you do not have to add too many elements, like the circle, which will be better.

5. REFLECTION

Experience:
This project was harder and more challenging than previous ones because we needed to create our own compositions and also with the font expression using InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. We need to mention the paragraph, leading, character styles, flow, and precise alignment features. I learned a lot of tools as well as using different fonts, weights, and sizes in this assignment.

Observation:
Throughout this project, I observed that adjustments in text formatting such as letter spacing, line height, and paragraph alignment were important as they impact readability and composition. Additionally, Mr. Vinod mentioned that margins are important as well, as when in the printing process, margin ensure that the text and elements are kept within a safe, visible area and are not cut off during the trimming process. Hence, we should always fix the words in the margin.

Findings:
I found that the contrast in font weight, size, and style that we created enhanced readability and also made the design more interesting. Besides, Mr. Vinod asked us to provide blocking out layouts. It allows us to plan and organize the content efficiently before diving into details.

This week, I continued with this book that I've read in week 3.

Chapter 2: Using counter spaces as form / page 10-11
- The spaces inside and around
This chapter talks about counter spaces, which play a crucial role in balancing letterforms, creating rhythm, and adding structure to type arrangements. However, people often overlooked them as design element. This chapter provides insights and practical advice on using counters as positive design elements, and also explores how counter spaces contribute to harmony within letterforms.
