Part 2: Define your concept

2.1 References and Concept

Fig.2.1.1 References of Design / (Week 7, 8/11/2024)

Before I started my sketch, I did some research on Pinterest and Google. I found some interesting images in which a woman was drowning. I think this scenery is related to my quotes, and I get some inspiration from it for my design. Moreover, I like the style of the 3D bubble font; it's cute and aesthetic. I also found some holographic background for the design of my typographic.

Concept

Title: I'm not perfect, I'm Limited Edition.

Details:
- Typographic:
The word "I'm not perfect", I want to design as a transparent foam bubble word, represents the idea that perfection is not a necessity or priority - it's fleeting and see-through, symbolizing its lack of substance or weight in defining one's value.

The word "I'm limited edition" is designed with vibrancy and present in a 3D effect with holographic colours to highlight its uniqueness and exclusivity, reinforcing the idea that individuality is what truly matters.

- Digital Image:
For the digital image, I used my own portrait image, and I wanted to express a woman with a calm expression emphasized confidence and satisfaction, aligning with the idea of embracing one's imperfections. The woman is in the water, gazing at the words "I'm Limited Edition", to symbolize a moment of reflection and self-realization, showing that she is accepting and embracing herself.

2.2 Sketches

Fig.2.2.1 Sketches of Poster / (Week 9, 22/11/2024)

Rough sketches done on paper. I choose two types of sans serif fonts provided (Google fonts), which are Nerko One Regular and Rubik Bubbles Regular for the basics of my typographic.

2.3 Progress

In Photoshop:

Fig.2.3.1 My portrait digital image & Background on Pinterest / (Week 9, 22/11/2024)

I take a picture in my swimming pool; it's tough to take the angle of the picture that I wanted. I found a background that is more clear and clean for my background.

Fig.2.3.2 Progress of Masking / (Week 9, 23/11/2024)

To begin, I select and mask my portrait following the techniques I learned. Then I put the image from Pinterest as my background. Later on, I moved on to Adobe Illustrator to do the next step.

In Adobe Illustrator:

I used these images for my typographic on clipping mask and 3D effect.

Fig.2.3.4 Progress of typographic / (Week 9, 23/11/2024)

I did the word "I'm Limited Edition" first, using the sans serif font of Nerko One Regular. Then, I used the pencil tool to edit the path and the design of the font.

Tools I used: Pencil Tool & Curvature

Fig.2.3.5 Progress of typographic / (Week 9, 23/11/2024)

Later on, I started to add 3D effects to it. By adjusting the object, materials, and lighting.

Object: Inflate > Perspective (30%)
Materials: Graphic > Select Image add to "your graphics" > select graphic > roughness (0.2)
Lighting: Adjust the light > Intensity (120%), Rotation (145%), Height (45%), Softness (40%), Intensity (86%) > Shadow > Behind Object > Distance from object (32%), Shadow Bounds (400%)

After that, I used the Pen Tool to draw a shape of the light from the mouth and made an outer glow and blur to it (Effect > Stylize > Outer Glow) / (Effect > Blur > Radial Blur) to present a sense of the woman was speaking out the words, and it looks more realistic.

Fig.2.3.7 Progress of Typographic / (Week 9, 23/11/2024)

For the words “I'm not perfect", I used the font Rubik Bubbles Regular. Then, I used the pen tool to draw the sense of liquid on the words. After that, I put the bubble image behind the words and created s clipping mask. I also add a black outer glow to the words to look clearly, as the background is light as well. Finally, to emphasize the word "perfect", I draw a flower pattern line on it and intertwine them.

Fig.3.3.8 Adding Gradient / (Week 9, 23/11/2024)

To emphasize the word and look more clearly, I added a gradient to the background that goes from dark to light.

Fig.3.3.9 Final Poster Design / (Week 9, 24/11/2024)

Finally, I came out with the finalized poster design. I've changed the background, which added a gradient from dark to light to emphasize the quotes.

FEEDBACK

Week 10:
Specific Feedback: You can proceed, that's a good work.

REFLECTION

Experiences:

This is my first time creating my own poster design using both Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. It was a creative and interesting process. From taking my own portrait picture and masking with another background picture, editing the hue/saturation and the curves of the colours, then creating my own typographic letters. I like the 3D typographic the most because it looks very aesthetic and cute and matches the initial visual idea in my mind.

Observation:

I observed that the holographic colours for "I'm Limited Edition" are more gorgeous than I thought. The image I found for the 3D graphic is not the same as the final outcome, but after applying the 3D effect, it blended and came out with a more realistic and harmonious outcome, which added layers of depth to it.

Findings:

Through this project, I realized that effects like 3D and gradients can enhance the visual appeal and meaning of the text. I learned that good typography and colour are very important in conveying a design's message. It can evoke specific emotions and meanings, making the design more impactful.
