PROCESS

- Pre-Production -
Fig.3.1.2 Drawing Storyboard / (Week 10, 25/6/2025)

In week 10,  Alicia and I worked together to film the footage for practice for the invisible effect based on our final project. The shooting was fun and ran smoothly. I handled the phone and she be the actor.
After the shoot, we draw the discuss the storyboard and draw it together using Laptop.

- Storyboard -
Fig.3.1.3 Storyboard #Page 1 / (Week 11, 2/7/2025)

Fig.3.1.4 Storyboard #Page 2 / (Week 11, 2/7/2025)

In week 11, we showed our storyboard to Mr. Martin for feedback and approval to ensure our shots was clear and achievable. Mr. Martin said the ending can changed a bit, whether make it to a loop, or just directly end the story. Then, we refined our storyboard (Fig.3.1.2 & Fig.3.1.3) in class and discussed the materials we need for next week shooting.

- Shooting Day -

Fig.3.1.5 Behind the Scene / (Week 12, 9/7/2025)

In week 12, we started to shoot our film "The Ring" in a classroom at our campus to maintain realism, especially for the exam atmosphere.

Props: Exam papers, pencils, watch, ring (magical object), green cloth, sticky note, ruler, bottles.

We divided our shoot into THREE sections:
1. Exam start & ring handover
2. Invisibility phase (VFX planned)
3. Glitch and panic scenes

During the shooting:
  • We used a tripod for stable framing.
  • Used cinematic mode on our phone to make it more professional.
  • Filmed clean plates for scenes where characters disappear or object float.
  • Repeated movements carefully for editing alignment.
  • Captured multiple takes for dramatic expressions.
Behind the Scenes (NG Moment):
During the first take, I couldn't help but break into laughter.... The tension of filming, the silence of the classroom, and the thought of acting made me laugh uncontrollably. It took us a few tries to calm down and get into character, which was the hardest part for me in this project. After a few rehearsals, I slowly got more comfortable and was able to stay focused for the full take. I'm thankful for my partner, Alicia, for being patient. I realized that mental preparation and focus before the camera rolls were very important.

- Editing -

Fig.3.1.6 Raw Footage / (Week 12, 10/7/2025)

After completing our shoot, we met up at a cafe the next day (Week 12, 10/7/2025) to start the editing process together. It was a funny to review everything we filmed. We started by going through each shot one by one to choose the final clips for editing. Then, we put them into Google Drive (Fig.3.1.5).

Once we selected the final clips and agreed on the overall edit direction, we decided to split the editing work. Some scenes were edited at home by each of us separately. We stay in touch and shared progress via Google Drive and messages.

- Workflow in Adobe After Effects

1. Edit VFX Scenes (Tutorial Video) and exported
*All of the invisible effects used the same way to edit.

Steps (Visual Effects):
1. Import footage > create new composition
2. Set key frame where the effect starts > clone > slice > rename: Roto
3. Used Roto Brush tool to brush the subject. (Fig.3.1.6)
4. Put "Roto" layer underneath
5. Clone footage layer > trim > rename: mask
6. Mask layer: Pencil tool > mask around subject > set key frame on mask path > adjust. (Fig.3.1.7)
7. Click "Inverted" > Pre-compose > Content-Aware Fill > Generate Fill Layer. (Fig.3.1.8)
8. Mask layer: Drag footage layer to the top > Displacement Map Effect
*Displacement Map: Reset (Roto), (Effects & Masks), (Luminance); Wrap pixels around. (Fig.3.1.9)
9. Set opacity key frame at the footage layer (100% > 50%)
10. Exported

- Workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro

2. Arranged the chosen clips on the timeline
During the editing process in Premiere Pro, as I arranged the clips in the timeline, I noticed that some of the transitions between scenes felt slightly awkward and lacked smooth visual flow. The scene continuity didn't convey the intended narrative rhythm, which made the sequence feel disconnected. After discussing with my partner, we decided to retake certain scenes at campus (Week 13, 16/7/2025) to ensure better continuity and smoother editing transitions.

Fig.3.1.12 Progression #6 - Adobe Premiere Pro / (Week 13, 16/7/2025)

Steps:
1. Imported all the footages into Premiere Pro
2. Trim the clips > Arrange all the clips in timeline

3.Synced sound and adjusted volume levels

After that, we added ambient sounds and sound effects by using Freesound.org and uploaded them into Google Drive.

Fig.3.1.14 Progression #7 - Adobe Premiere Pro / (Week 13, 18/7/2025)

Steps:
1. Imported the audio files and sync with the clips.
2. Adjusted the volume level. (Fig.3.1.13)

4. Added captions, dialogues & transitions

Steps:
1. Insert captions to each clips.
2. Imported audio of the dialogues and sync with the clips.

Fig.3.1.15 Progression #16 - Fade out transitions / (Week 13, 18/7/2025)

Fade Out Transition:
- Move the cursor to the end of the timeline > Right click > Apply Default Transitions (Fig.3.1.15)
- Adjusted the duration of the fade: Drag the "Cross Dissolve"

5. Color Correction

Fig.3.1.16 Progression #17 - Color Correction / (Week 13, 19/7/2025)

Steps:
1. Added adjustment layers
2. Adjusted the color (curves, exposure...)

We applied the Lumetri Color effect for the dream part of the clips to increase the eerie feeling. When the character wakes up, we reset the color back to normal to create a transition from dream to reality.

6. Added Background Music
We choose a creepy and tension music for our background music from pixabay.com.

FEEDBACK

Week 10 (25/6/2025):

Specific Feedback: The story is ok, you can start drawing the storyboard.

Week 11 (2/7/2025):

Specific Feedback: The ending of the story was a bit confusing, maybe you can make it a loop or just directly end the story.

Week 14 (23/7/2025)

Specific Feedback: I think you need to have a close-up when she is looking at the notes, it's too small, cannot see. Also, the colour you might need to change it to a more creepy feel, maybe use bluish colour. After that, you can submit.

REFLECTION

Experiences:

This final project was very fun and fulfilling. I worked with my partner, Alicia together. We created a proposal to plan out the concept and visualize how the scenes should look. We actually spent a long time brainstorming the story because we had to make sure it matched the theme while still being simple enough to shoot and apply visual effects to. The video is only 1 minute, so it wasn't easy to come up with something achievable and interesting enough. After many ideas, we finally decided on "The Ring", which includes a dream sequence with a mysterious and creepy atmosphere. During the shoot, we took on multiple roles such as filming, directing, and acting, as there were only the two of us. I was the one who had more scenes to act in, which was quite stressful because I kept laughing during the takes. It was really hard to stay serious in some scenes, so we had to retake quite a few shots because of me...luckily my partner and I had a funny memory in this process. After filming, we used Adobe After Effects to edit the VFX effects and used Premiere Pro to arrange the clips, sound, and music, and finalize it. Overall, we work together, and everything run's smoothly during the process.

Observation:

I noticed that planning and storyboarding were very important. We need to think not only about a good idea but also about how to shoot it in a way that fits the edit later. Also, communication was really important. Since it was just the two of us handling everything, we had to discuss and check with each other at every step. We also had to divide tasks and work together to make the whole process more effective. We gave each other feedback and took turns editing the visual effects. Luckily, I have a good partner who supported me, and we had no arguments during the whole process.

Findings:

From this project, the most I learned was how to apply an invisible effect to the object in Adobe After Effects. In Premiere Pro, I also learned to cut scenes more precisely and create better flow with background music and sound effects. Overall, this project improved my technical skills and also my creative thinking. I was satisfied of what we had done in the final outcome.
