REFLECTION

Experiences:
My first semester finally comes to an end; it's a wonderful and rewarding journey. Throughout this semester, I used Adobe Illustrator the most, along with InDesign, Photoshop, and FontLab 7 apps to create my artwork. Out of all the apps I used, I found Adobe Illustrator to be my favourite. It felt the easiest for my artwork, and the tools are easy to operate. In Illustrator, I created my first design of type expression and font design. One of the interesting processes was creating a GIF of a word using Photoshop, as watching static typography transform into motion felt like an achievement in itself. Moreover, I used InDesign to do text formatting, teaching me how to organize text into clean, visually appealing layouts. For my final project, which was creating a font design, it was the most fulfilling project. It gave me a sense of ownership and creative freedom as it allowed me to use it in my other artwork. Seeing my font come to life and integrate seamlessly into different projects was a fulfilling experience. Overall, this journey has been a significant period of growth for me; it has been a crucial stop in my journey toward becoming a more professional designer.

Observations:
Through these projects, I realized that design is much more complex than I thought. It's not just about creativity and visual appeal, but also about the intricate details and principles that guide the design process. I initially thought that learning design would be mostly about drawing out my ideas and making things look good, but I learned that there's a lot of theory and technical knowledge involved. For example, in Illustrator, typefaces are constructed to learn the importance of balance, alignment, composition, and spacing in layout design. In InDesign, an effective layout isn't just about aligning text and images; it involves precise control, like leading and kerning, to ensure readability; every decision has a purpose. We need to consider and understanding of both aesthetics and functionality before we create.

Findings:
Looking back at this semester, I'm proud of how far I've come. When I first started, I had little experience with these tools, but now I feel confident in my ability to create designs. I'm genuinely appreciative to my lecturer, Mr. Vinod, for teaching us so much throughout this semester. He put a lot of effort into explaining both the creative and technical aspects of design, which have broadened my perspective. Each project taught me different things and developed new skills, and the most important was that I did really learn a lot of things. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I'm willing to continue exploring, learning, and growing in the semesters to come.
