REFLECTION
Experiences:
This semester has been a long journey of exploration, experimentation, and learning. It was exhausting but rewarding during these tasks. In Task 1A, we studied the typographic systems. We created our own layout design based on the 8 typographic systems — axial, radial, dilatational, random, grid, modular, transitional, and bilateral. Later in Task 1B, I learned to observe letterforms in our daily lives. We extracted letters from an image and refined the letterforms. Then, we used those refined letterforms to create a poster, blending images and types into one cohesive visual.
In Task 2, I think it was the most mentally and physically tiring for me. Because I made a lot of trial and error, especially during the process of making GIFs (Task 2A) and collateral (Task 2B) designs. In Task 2A, I had to create a wordmark using my own name, and it was really difficult to find a version that felt "just right". I keep redesigning the wordmark again and again. I don't want it to be overly decorative, but also not too plain, and in keeping with my personality. I adjusted the letter shapes, stroke weight, composition, and spacing every week after receiving feedback. In Task 2B, I expanded the wordmark into three pieces of collateral, which gave me a more real-world branding experience. However, I also struggled with creating different patterns or extended ideas from the wordmark. Overall, although it was tiring, I learned a lot of things and also felt a sense of achievement.
Finally comes Task 3, I actually enjoyed this part, as we did something similar in the previous tasks so the process was quite smooth for me. This task needs to create a full set of .ttf and apply them to application use. This gave me a full-circle experience of ideating, designing, and applying typography in real-world contexts. I was satisfied with my final project.
Observation:
Throughout this process, I noticed the most important thing was "consistency". Everything, whether in letterforms, layout, alignment, and so on, "consistency" always needs to be considered in a design. Moreover, before creating letters, always create a grid for the base structure. It helped me to maintain proportion across letters and improve the overall balance of the font. Apart from that, kerning and letterspacing are also crucial, as they determining readability and the overall feel of a word or sentence.
Findings:
Overall, I'm so happy that we finally ended this semester, finally can rest. I really appreciate what Mr. Vinod has taught us; I've learned a lot from him. Each task taught me different things that I can apply in the future. I've become more attentive to detail, more creative, and more patient. I hope to explore more experimental and expressive type in the future and maybe even expand my font "Bloblock" into motion or interactive formats. This semester challenged me, frustrated me at times, but ultimately shaped me.
Thanks for reading me~
