Part 2. Design Direction

Sketch

Fig.2.1.1 Sketch progress / (Week 11, 3/12/2024)

I started with a rough sketch on paper, and here's the initial idea of my self-titled poster. The idea I came up with is myself as the main object, and a classic car and film strips, disco behind, just like a collage. The word "YOLO" is like shouting it out, presenting a more dynamic and playful feel. Plus, I wanted to put some images of my own experiences on traveling.

FINAL OUTCOME

Fig.2.1.10 Final Outcome - Self Titled / (Week 12, 10/12/2024)

TITLE: YOLO —— You Only Live Once

ARTISTIC STATEMENT:

I created a playful poster with the concept of embracing our life and the idea that "YOLO—You Only Live Once". This design combines energetic visuals with a mix of real-life memories and nostalgic elements to reflect the excitement of living in the moment. I want to present a dynamic, fun, and full of energy experience—like a snapshot of carefree adventures and meaningful connections with friends and loves.

The central figure, surrounded by film strips, a vintage red car, and a disco, represents thejoy of freedom. Through this poster, I hope to inspire others to embrace every moment, chase their dreams, do whatever they want, and create memories that make them smile—bacause YOLO!

Part 3. Execution and Post Production

Progress In Adobe Effects

Fig.3.1.1 Progression #1 - Import / (Week 13, 16/12/2024)

This week, we moved on to continue part 3 of the animation progress. I first import the image from Photoshop. For my animation, my idea is the word "YOLO" starts small and grows larger, as if shouting, like expressing excitement. It might pulse or bounce slightly after expanding to emphasize energy. Next, the hands sway from side to side, like they're walking joyfully, creating a playful vibe. Plus, the film photo gradually appears on the screen, starting faint and becoming fully visible, like a memory being unveiled gently.

Here's the transform I made for each element. I used Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity to make it more dynamic.

REFLECTION

Experience:
In this final project, I created a poster using my self-image and images of travelling and enjoyable moments with my friends and family to do with this "Self-Titled" project. I first used Photoshop for the composition and collage, using masking, colour adjustment, and so on. After that, I moved on to Adobe After Effects to do the animation. However, I made a mistake by setting the size to A4 instead of 1080 x 1920 px, which is the required instruction. Luckily I realized it before I did the animation. Hence, I quickly adjust the size midway through. Then, I took some time to think about the placement of each element and tried different compositions. Finally, I came out with an ideal artwork; I think it expresses my identity creatively, and I was satisfied with it.

Observation:
Through this project, I learned that getting a good composition is not easy, but it's so important. Although balancing the placement and scale of all the elements took time, it made me realize how much even small changes could impact the overall look. Apart from that, adding animation made it more interesting, as the movement helped draw attention to key parts of the piece.

Findings:
Overall, this project taught me a lot about planning and always reading the instructions before I start and being flexible when things go wrong. I will be more careful with my future assignments.
